At just a teenager, South African innovator Bohlale Mphahlele is already making a powerful impact in the world of personal safety.

Mphahlele developed the Alerting Earpiece, a discreet safety device designed to resemble a standard earring. Hidden within the jewelry is a small camera and alert system that can quietly capture photos of an attacker and send a distress signal — including the wearer’s live GPS location — to trusted contacts and emergency services.

This groundbreaking invention earned recognition at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists and has drawn praise from education officials for its potential to enhance personal safety and assist with evidence collection.

Mphahlele’s work reminds us that innovation has no age limit — and that young minds are leading the way in creating safer, smarter solutions for our communities.
