Life as a military child often comes with unique challenges, and Amani Ambay has turned those experiences into a powerful force for good. At just 18 years old, Amani has been recognized as Operation Homefront’s 2026 Military Child of the Year® for the Army for her extraordinary achievements and commitment to service.

The daughter of an Army Reserve colonel, Amani learned early on the meaning of sacrifice and resilience. When her father returned home with serious injuries from deployment, she stepped up with compassion and maturity beyond her years, helping care for him daily.

Her strength was tested again in 2021 when her family narrowly escaped a devastating house fire, losing their home and belongings. In the aftermath, Amani witnessed the power of community support, an experience that would later inspire her own efforts to give back.

Amani is the founder of the Yalla Foundation, a nonprofit connecting military and civilian youth, especially girls, across 26 countries. Through virtual platforms, students build friendships, share cultures, and collaborate in meaningful ways.

Now a student at George Washington University, Amani is part of the Honors Program and has been named a U.S. Presidential Scholar. She plans to double major in international affairs and finance, with aspirations to study across multiple countries and continue building global connections.

Amani’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, young leaders can create meaningful change that spans the world.
