University of Iowa student and entrepreneur Dasia Taylor was featured on ABC’s Good Morning America, where she showcased her innovative NERD STEM Box: Ooey Gooey Science Edition during a national five-minute segment. A junior majoring in global health studies, Dasia demonstrated a hands-on experiment called Liquid Worms, designed to bring real science experiences into kids’ homes.
Dasia founded NERD STEM Box to make science more accessible, equitable, and engaging for children. Her entrepreneurial journey began at age 17 when she created surgical stitches that change color to detect infection—an invention that earned national recognition at science competitions.
Through support from the University of Iowa’s John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, Dasia has grown her business significantly. Earlier this month, she earned first place and $3,500 at the center’s Startup Incubator Summer Track Demo Day. In its first year, NERD STEM Box has reached over 800 children nationwide.
During her appearance, Dasia emphasized the importance of community-driven solutions as schools face increasing budget constraints and closed by proudly acknowledging the role her university has played in supporting her journey.
Her message is clear: kids’ ideas matter—and they belong in science.
