April Highlight: Demi Johnson – Protecting Our Planet, One Oyster at a Time

At seeMYchild, we’re proud to recognize young changemakers who are taking bold steps to care for our environment—and Demi Johnson is leading the way. This dedicated teen scientist from Mississippi was recently honored with a prestigious National Geographic award for her outstanding work in oyster reef conservation.

Demi’s passion for marine life began in 7th grade when she joined the Mississippi Oyster Gardening Program. Through hands-on work cultivating oysters in underwater cages and monitoring their growth, she gained a deep understanding of oyster ecosystems and the vital role they play in coastal health.

Out of over 2,100 submissions, Demi’s project rose to the top, earning her recognition through the National Geographic Society’s Slingshot Challenge. Her commitment to environmental stewardship reminds us that young voices and innovative ideas can spark real change.
