September Highlight: Heman Bekele, TIME's 2024 Kid of the Year

Heman Bekele is a 15 year old scientist and inventor!

  • Last year, he won the 3M and Discovery Education Young Scientist Challenge.

  • He won by developing the concept for a soap that could potentially treat and even prevent multiple types of skin cancer.

  • Heman was inspired to take on this project by his parents teaching him about sun safety from a young age, and then thinking about the many people who work outdoors and are thus constantly exposed to UV rays.

  • He became interested in chemistry at 7 years old, and his discoveries started with a set he got for Christmas.

  • Although still in high school, he is already doing summer research in a lab at Johns Hopkins to pursue his ideas.

  • His goals are to make skin cancer treatment more affordable and easily available, so that hopefully cases can be treated earlier.
